Cambridge 19 - Test 2
Question
The working week should be shorter and workers should have a longer weekend.
Do you agree or disagree?
Answer
Some people argue that the working week should be shorter and employees should enjoy longer weekends, while others maintain that extending working hours is crucial for productivity. Both perspectives have their merits, yet I firmly believe that a longer weekend is more beneficial for workers and organizations alike.
On the one hand, proponents of extended working hours claim that longer weeks lead to higher productivity. When individuals dedicate more time to their tasks, they can complete larger workloads and meet deadlines more efficiently. For example, employees in manufacturing industries often work extended hours to ensure production targets are met. Nevertheless, it should not be overlooked that excessive working hours can have adverse effects, as employees may experience fatigue, stress and declining well-being, which in turn undermines their overall performance. Research shows that overworked individuals are more prone to errors and absenteeism, indicating that longer hours do not necessarily translate to better outcomes. (Antithesis)
On the other hand, lengthening weekends provides workers with crucial time to rest, recharge and maintain a healthy work-life balance. Free time allows individuals to engage in family activities, hobbies and social interactions, which contributes to improved mental and physical health. For instance, in countries like Sweden, the implementation of a six-hour workday with extended weekends has been associated with higher employee satisfaction and sustained productivity. By having sufficient leisure time, workers return to their jobs more focused and efficient, ultimately benefiting the organization as a whole.
In conclusion, while longer working hours may offer short-term gains for companies, I am of the opinion that extending weekends has far more significant advantages. A well-rested workforce not only performs better individually but also strengthens teamwork and organizational efficiency, making shorter working weeks a more sustainable approach in the long run.
