Cambridge 20 - Test 3
Question
Some people have decided to reduce the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying altogether. Do you think the environmental benefits of this development outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses?
Answer
Some individuals choose to reduce the number of flights they take each year, or even stop flying altogether, in order to lessen environmental damage. I believe that the environmental advantages of this development far outweigh the drawbacks for both individuals and businesses.
On the one hand, frequent air travel is often necessary for work and economic activities. Many international companies rely on face-to-face meetings, contract negotiations, and trade fairs that require employees to fly abroad. Limiting air travel could therefore hinder business growth and reduce global networking opportunities. In addition, individuals may find that not flying restricts their freedom to travel, explore different cultures, or visit family members living overseas. These inconveniences explain why some people see cutting down on flights as disadvantageous.
On the other hand, the environmental gains of reducing flights are far more significant. Airplanes emit far more greenhouse gases per passenger than most other forms of transportation, and the aviation industry is a major contributor to climate change. By choosing alternative means of travel such as trains, buses, or even virtual meetings in place of business trips, people can drastically reduce their carbon footprint. For example, many European countries now encourage train travel over short-haul flights, as it is both more sustainable and increasingly efficient. Although these alternatives may sometimes be less convenient, they represent a meaningful step towards protecting the planet for future generations.
In conclusion, while cutting down on air travel may cause certain inconveniences to individuals and businesses, the environmental benefits are far more crucial. Therefore, I firmly believe that this development is positive overall.
