Cambridge 20 - Test 4

Question

Many aspects of the way people dress today are influenced by global fashion trends. How has global fashion become such a strong influence on people’s lives? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Answer

The way people dress today is heavily shaped by international fashion trends. This essay will discuss how global fashion has become such a powerful influence and argue that, despite some cultural benefits, the overall impact is largely negative.

On the one hand, the dominance of global fashion can be explained by the rapid growth of social media and online platforms. Individuals across the world are constantly exposed to fashion influencers, celebrities, and major brands, making trends spread almost instantly. Once a style gains global attention, it is likely to be adopted by people regardless of their cultural background. For example, the gothic style, once perceived as eccentric, gradually entered mainstream culture and is now recognizable in many different countries. Such diffusion illustrates how interconnected societies have become in terms of lifestyle and personal expression.

On the other hand, I believe this phenomenon has troubling consequences, particularly for younger generations. The widespread adoption of foreign trends can undermine traditional dress codes and erode cultural identity. In the United States, for instance, some modern styles worn by teenagers are seen as inconsistent with social norms and family values. When such trends cross into more conservative societies, such as Vietnam, they often trigger criticism and even resistance. This highlights how an excessive reliance on global fashion can weaken local traditions and create cultural tension.

In conclusion, while international fashion trends allow individuals to engage with a wider cultural community, their rapid and unchecked spread tends to threaten cultural values. Therefore, I hold the view that the influence of global fashion is more harmful than beneficial.
